 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing, on 9 December, of Brian Dunlop, a highly respected member of the AWI since 2003 and father of AWI member, Sophie Dunlop. We extend our most sincere condolences to Brian’s family and friends. He will be greatly missed

7.      Leonora Howlett 1st Prize at Glebe Art Competition


On 3rd July Leonora Howlett shared First Prize in the Open Section of the Glebe Art Competition with her oil on canvas titled "Darkly"

8.              ELEVEN  DOYENS  of  WATERCOLOUR

an exhibition featuring works in watercolour by eleven of Sydney's finest artists in the medium

at Taylor Galleries 116 Smith St., Summer Hill NSW 2139. Phone (02) 9716 4039

The Gallery will be open from 11am on Thursday 18th June, and the exhibition will be officially opened at 7.30pm by Dr. Guy Warren OAM.

In his official opening night speech, Dr. Guy Warren OAM, while commending his fellow exhibitors on the superb quality of their work, also made the point that he heartily agreed with JMW Turner's statement that the only fact about art that he had arrived at with unequivocal certainty was that "it is indeed a rum business".

9.                                    FAREWELL                  

                    FREDERIC BATES OAM FRAS AWI

                                       1918 - 2009

 

The funeral was held on Friday 15 May 2009 for our esteemed member, Frederic Bates OAM.

Fred was a member for 43 years, 1966 - 2009.  President for 12 years, 1972 - 1985.  He was also a Life Member.

A delegation of 5 members represented the Institute.  Lead by President, David van Nunen, they were Graham Austin OAM, Vice - President Ian Chapman, Jocelyn Maughan, Robin Norling and Brian Stratton OAM.

Emeritus Presidents Graham Austin OAM and Brian Stratton OAM gave eulogies, Graham for the Institute and Brian for the Royal Art Society of NSW.

10.                OUR NEW PRESIDENT ABROAD


John Inglis, President of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), and AWI President, David van Nunen, during their meeting in Glasgow on 16th April 2009. We are pleased to announce that, as a result of this meeting, it was agreed that four members of the RSW will, for the first time, be our guest artists in the forthcoming AWI Annual Exhibition.

John Doyle a.k.a. Rampaging Roy Slaven is wearing the scarf presented to him by President David van Nunen purchased in Scotland from his recent trip to England and Scotland, where David cemented relationships with the Presidents of the Royal Watercolour Society and Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.
