AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MY MOTHER

by Meg Stewart

Description of book

This delightful biography of Australian painter Margaret Coen is written by her daughter, Meg Stewart.

Margaret Coen was born into an era when it wasn't easy for a woman to forge an artistic career. Yet she survived as a commercial artist during the Depression, joining Sydney's bohemian set in their sketch clubs and raucous studio parties. She became close friends with Norman Lindsay and married poet Douglas Stewart, which immediately gave her entrée‚ into Sydney's literary circles of the time.

Meg tells her mother's story, first published twenty years ago, in Margaret's voice, with a stream of anecdotes and personal details that build a captivating picture of her life and of Australian social and artistic history in this era. Meg has also written a fascinating new chapter on her mother's relationship with Norman Lindsay.

TOM THOMPSON

TRILOGY OF MASTERWORKS

Tom Thompson with publisher Jocelyn Maughan and Robin Norling

Hardback with 18 pages of colour paintings and drawings.

An extract from Jocelyn Maughan's homage:

"... an episode in Tom Thompson's art is summarised here in three of his paintings.  Like many painters before him, this artist has explored his art through a wide range of interests: murals in public buildings, portraits, drawings and posters in galleries and private colections as well as figure paintings, historical and religious.

In this book, the latter conform essentially to the Australian genre.  These three major works originated in the country town of Briadwood.

This book is a homage to someone I believe is a great Australian artist.  I hope, through this book, that many others will share with the genius that is Tom Thompson"

Purchased 1944
Collection: Queensland Art Gallery

Making it Modern: The Watercolours of Kenneth Macqueen

160 pages  paperback colour illustrations

A leading Australian modernist with a national profile, Kenneth Macqueen (1897–1960) was a distinctive watercolourist and prolific painter. His watercolours reflect a buoyant and optimistic vision of the country he worked, with crisp, clear washes evocative of the climate and topography. Following his move to Millmerran in Queensland in 1922, his Darling Downs property became the primary focus of his work and art. Equally important, however, are those paintings capturing the patterns and pleasures of the seaside, which were inspired by family holidays on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts and the islands off Queensland. The only book available on Macqueen, this richly illustrated publication features works from Australian public and private collections, and essays by eminent scholars.

Published by the Queensland Art Gallery for the exhibition ‘Making it Modern: The Watercolours of Kenneth Macqueen’, 10 November 2007 – 5 May 2008.
