MARGARET COEN Honoured Member of the Australian Watercolour Institute From 1937 – 1993
AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MY MOTHER by Meg Stewart Description of book This delightful biography of Australian painter Margaret Coen is written by her daughter, Meg Stewart. Margaret Coen was born into an era when it wasn't easy for a woman to forge an artistic career. Yet she survived as a commercial artist during the Depression, joining Sydney's bohemian set in their sketch clubs and raucous studio parties. She became close friends with Norman Lindsay and married poet Douglas Stewart, which immediately gave her entrée‚ into Sydney's literary circles of the time. Meg tells her mother's story, first published twenty years ago, in Margaret's voice, with a stream of anecdotes and personal details that build a captivating picture of her life and of Australian social and artistic history in this era. Meg has also written a fascinating new chapter on her mother's relationship with Norman Lindsay. Fred Cress AM, elected to AWI membership in 2006, is the subject of a new and splendid book written by Ken McGregor for $99.95. Published by Macmillan, this is the third hard back book on Fred Cress's work, and the first to focus on his drawings (including watercolours and pastels). The book was launched by broadcaster and author Richard Morecroft at the Opening of Fred's exhibition of drawings at the Australian Galleries Works on Paper Gallery, 24 Glenmore Road, Paddington 2007. Fred Cress is a Sydney artist who divides his time between Australia and rural France, where he maintains a second studio. He is a keen student of human nature. While his quizzical gaze detects the subjects - those who flirt, chase, dance, banquet and otherwise engage in the whole gamut of human affairs - his drawing skills, honed over five decades, provide the means of recording them on paper or canvas. This book is about drawing, and about the artist's use of drawing to capture multiple nuances of human behaviour. Cress is an Australian artist who subscribes to the tradition of artists like Rembrandt and Goya who sought to express aspects of the human condition as they saw it in their times. The more than 900 drawings reproduced in this 256 page book and are arranged in series which date from the 1950s to the present. The book is available from the following: OR www.australiangalleries.com.au

TOM THOMPSON TRILOGY OF MASTERWORKS
Tom Thompson with publisher Jocelyn Maughan and Robin Norling Hardback with 18 pages of colour paintings and drawings. An extract from Jocelyn Maughan's homage: "... an episode in Tom Thompson's art is summarised here in three of his paintings. Like many painters before him, this artist has explored his art through a wide range of interests: murals in public buildings, portraits, drawings and posters in galleries and private colections as well as figure paintings, historical and religious. In this book, the latter conform essentially to the Australian genre. These three major works originated in the country town of Briadwood. This book is a homage to someone I believe is a great Australian artist. I hope, through this book, that many others will share with the genius that is Tom Thompson" Available from: Jocelyn Maughan Bakehouse Gallery 19 Bay Street Patonga NSW 2256 Phone: 02 4379 1102 $29.95 plus postage
